Scientific research confirms video games are beneficial for you. After all, Video Games are sports. Every time we listing to “ Don’t sit too close to monitor, you will ruin your eyes”, “Stop wasting your time playing video games, go outside and play real sports”. I know, too hard to believe after listing this type of myths for years.

Research has shown that games are also good for health and both for the brain and the body. Video games are beneficial by the way they engage with different facets of our daily lives. Some of the benefits are physical, psychological, and social. Contrary to popular belief, they can promote healthy living and increased social activity through various avenues.

Video Games are Good for You —

1. Slow Down Aging:

Persons in every age group have one common problem with aging. There’s a reason why you see senior citizens driving at 25 mph. A healthy exercise routine can help your body feel 50 when you are 60, our brain can also be kept ‘in shape’.

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Iowa showed that playing games can do just that. 681 healthy people aged more than 50 played a video game for 10 hours per day for five to eight weeks, at last, they found —

“We’ve shown that 10 hours is enough to slow the decline by several years. We saw a range across all our tests from a minimum of a year-and-a-half all the way up to about six-and-a-half years of recovery or improvement. From just 10 to 14 hours of training, that’s quite a lot of improvement”

To performing any task include video games that exercise your mind helps it stay sharper.

2. Better Decision Maker:

Video games demand us to view and track moving peripheral images that improve our ability to receive sensory data and thus help us make more precise decisions.

In a study, a group of adults with no gaming experience play and action games for 50 hours. And the second group of the same age played a slow-paced strategy game instead and found —

“Action video games are fast-paced, and there are peripheral images and events popping up, and disappearing. These video games are teaching people to become better at taking sensory data in, and translating it into correct decisions.”

Actually, in a game, you have to make decisions fast and execute it. So your brain trained to do it.

3. Improve Eyesight:

Most of the person who always plays games always listening “You are going to blind watching that bright screen all day”.

In a study, a group of experienced first-person shooter gamers experienced first-person shooter games like Call of Duty and casual gamers played games like The Sims 2.

After this study found that playing action games improves an ability called contrast sensitivity function. It helps us to discern between changes in shades of gray against a colored backdrop, which is very beneficial while driving at night.

4. Enhance Ability to Learn:

Most people think that video games make you bad at reading, but researchers found certain video games can actually enhance our brain flexibility.

In a study, 72 volunteers play two different games for 40 hours over six to eight weeks. One game was Starcraft which one is a fast real-time strategy game and The Sims, a slower life simulation game and conclusion —

“This result supports the notion that within-StarCraft gaming manipulation led participants to manage more information sources during gameplay, thus leading to enhancements in cognitive flexibility.”

The slower game may not have some benefit, but our favorite fast-paced games are helping us become a fast and better learner.

5. Improve Hand-Eye coordination:

Most professions require better hand-eye coordination than the average person.

Actually surgeons depend on theirs to not only perform a successful operation but also make sure they don’t nick artery or vital organ. That’s why a lot of aspiring surgeons are now required to perform virtual surgeries for training.

Example — Who always plays a driving game, they are a really good driver in real life.

6. Improve Focus and Attention:

Parents always worry that their children sit in class thinking about Minecraft or Pokemon instead of listening to the teacher. But actually games helped kids to pay more attention by improving cognition and perception.

8. Multitasking:

In strategy games, for instance, while developing a city type game, an unexpected surprise like an enemy might emerge. This forces the player to be flexible and quickly change whole tactics.

Video Games are not all about good, it also has some bad side. When a child plays violent games that increase aggression, decrease prosocial thinking. Instead of many other reason like game addiction and much more reason that indicates playing video games is bad.

According to me, playing video game in a controlled way is very good, but excessive is really too bad. And take away violent games from children like GTA, etc.
